When Jane woke that day, the house was on fire
Jack was away, she must’ve let the gas on
She ran downstairs, the smoke was crippling
Her eyes were watering, even more than before

She called out his name although she knew he wasn’t there
What can one say, you know that hearts have their ways
She ran into the kitchen, her shelter from flames
She glanced at her stove but it wasn’t on

What had been on?
What was on?
Was there anything still on?

Our time would awake on a Sunday
lying in while the gardener outside mowed the lawn
and cleared all those weeds in the back

As the heat drove her cries she yanked and pulled at the front door
But it too wouldn’t budge so she sank to the floor
Her eyes cold, from what she’d seen before her
Oh, Jack was the door.
